The Magic of the Unexpected

That morning, I hadn’t planned on capturing anything extraordinary. My goal was simple: to photograph the soft, golden light on the peaks of Crowfoot Mountain just after sunrise. I didn’t want to be in a rush, as I feel that can sometimes ruin the experience of the moment.

I left home around 4 AM, aiming to arrive by 6:30, with hopes of catching the perfect light as it shone on the mountain’s rugged surface.

As I approached the parking lot, I noticed something unexpected—a storm was sweeping over Bow Lake. My heart raced as I rounded the corner, and there it was: the most breathtaking double rainbow I had ever seen, arching gracefully over the lake, its vibrant colors contrasting sharply with the stormy skies.

In that moment, I panicked. I knew this was a once-in-a-lifetime shot, and I couldn’t afford to miss it. I pressed the gas pedal, sped into the parking lot (safely of course), and leaped out of the car, camera bag in hand. The rain was pouring down, but the fear of missing this scene outweighed any concern for myself or my gear.

With no time to set up my tripod, I decided to take a chance. I steadied myself, took a deep breath, and fired off a few handheld shots. The moment was fleeting—just as quickly as the rainbows had appeared, they began to fade. 

I rushed to set up my tripod, but by the time I was ready, the magic was gone. The rainbows had vanished, leaving only the memory of their brilliance.

I checked my camera, unsure of what I’d captured. To my amazement, the images were sharp, vivid, and full of the emotion of that incredible moment.

Against all odds, I had managed to preserve the scene with just a few handheld shots. It was a rare and unexpected gift from nature, and I knew instantly that this would be one of my all-time favorite images.

All prints are created after the order, please allow 3-8 business days to print. After that it will ship out and you will receive a tracking number. Expect an email within 5-8 days to let you know your order is on the way!
