My name is James Andrew. I'm a self-taught fine art landscape photographer based in Calgary, Alberta, minutes from Banff National Park, which is either very convenient or very dangerous for someone who can't stop chasing light.

I came to photography sideways. In 2018 I bought a camera to document my daughter growing up. I was working as an electrician at the time, a job that paid the bills and quietly wore me down. Then I started driving out into the Rockies on my days off, alone, with nothing but a camera and my thoughts. For the first time in years, I felt calm. That feeling became something I couldn't stop chasing.

The night that changed everything was a Tuesday in November. My daughter was already in bed. It was -30 outside. A photographer friend texted, the aurora might show at Peyto Lake. I almost stayed home. Instead I drove two hours out, hiked up in pitch black, and watched the northern lights erupt over the mountains for the first time in my life. I stood there completely alone and completely awestruck. When I looked at the images on my camera, I knew. This was my calling.

I spent the next three years learning the craft before going all in full time.

I photograph aurora, storm light, and the fleeting moments most people never get to see, because I believe the world is more breathtaking than our busy lives allow us to notice. We've lost our connection to nature. These prints exist to give a little of it back.

These aren't subjects I visit. They're places I know.

My work has been selected for three Calgary exhibitions, including a 10-piece solo exhibition in a downtown office building and two features through Hello Art. I've also placed prints with corporate clients and private collectors across Alberta.
