When people think of Alberta photography, they think of the mountains. But the province's prairies and foothills offer a completely different kind of photographic drama, one that requires a different kind of patience and rewards a different kind of attention.

East of the Rockies, the land opens into rolling grasslands that stretch to the horizon, interrupted by grain elevators, abandoned farmsteads, and fenceposts cutting through long grass. There are no peaks to anchor the composition, no glacial lakes to provide instant drama. What the prairie offers instead is sky, immense, uninterrupted, and in constant motion.

It is storm country. Supercell thunderstorms build over the foothills on summer afternoons and roll east across the prairies in towers of cloud that can reach fifteen kilometres into the atmosphere. Mammatus formations hang in pendulous clusters beneath anvil tops. Rainbows appear and disappear in minutes. The light at storm's edge, when the last sunlight breaks under a retreating cloud wall and illuminates the landscape in gold while darkness builds behind, is unlike anything found in the mountains. It is more dramatic precisely because the land offers no shelter from it. You see the full scale of what weather can do.

James Andrew has been photographing the Alberta prairie and foothills for years, learning to read the sky the way a sailor reads water. The best prairie images don't happen on clear days. They happen in the thirty minutes before a storm arrives, or in the brief window after one passes, when the air goes still and the light turns extraordinary.

Endure is one of the most emotionally resonant images in the entire collection. A weathered wooden barn stands alone in a field of barley, backlit by the last light of a retreating storm as darkness builds to the east. A sunburst flares through a gap in the barn's door. The sky above is a swirling canvas of storm cloud, golden light, and deep shadow. It is an image about persistence, about the things that are built to last and the forces that test them. It has found homes with collectors who have no particular connection to Alberta, but who respond immediately to the emotional weight of the scene.

New Beginning captures the Alberta foothills near Pincher Creek at the moment when a summer storm breaks apart and double rainbows arc over rolling green hills. All tension and release. The image holds that particular quality of prairie light that follows violence,  clean, clarified, briefly perfect.

Twilight Over the Rockies is a wide panorama of the eastern front of the Rockies at dusk, with a full moon setting over the foothills as the last light fades from the sky. Photographed from the high prairie east of the mountains, it captures the view that every Albertan who has driven west has seen, but in a light and at a moment that most never witness.
