This photograph was taken beneath the towering presence of Castle Mountain, one of Banff’s most iconic silhouettes, on a night that reminded me why I fell in love with chasing light in the first place. 

I’ve spent years staying up late, watching forecasts, driving dark mountain highways, hoping for the right conditions. But nothing prepares you for a night when the aurora doesn’t just appear… it erupts. Waves of green, violet, and soft crimson swept across the sky, wrapping themselves around the jagged shape of Castle Mountain like a living veil. For a moment, the whole landscape felt suspended in something ancient and electric.

Aurora moments are never guaranteed. They don’t wait for you. All you can do is show up, trust your instincts, and be willing to freeze a little longer than you planned. On this night, the stars aligned, both literally and figuratively, and I was lucky enough to be there with my camera ready.

I titled this piece Aurora Over Castle Mountain because the scene needs no embellishment. What you see is exactly what unfolded in front of me: a rare collision of mountain grandeur and celestial light.

My hope is that this print brings that same sense of wonder into your home, a quiet reminder of how wild and unpredictable this world can be, and how beautiful it becomes when we slow down long enough to witness it.
