How to Choose Art for a Calgary Office

Choosing art for an office is different from choosing art for a home.

At home, you can be completely personal. In an office, the piece still has to feel like you, but it also has to work for employees, clients, visitors, and the room itself.

I have had more conversations about this than I expected when I started selling prints. The question is usually not, "What is your best photograph?" It is, "What will actually work on this wall?"

Start with the room, not the artwork

The first thing I look at is scale. A beautiful 16x24 print can disappear on a twelve foot boardroom wall. A 40x60 piece can feel overwhelming in a smaller office.

Before choosing an image, I want to know the wall width, the furniture below it, how far people will usually stand from it, and what kind of light the room gets.

If you send me a photo of the wall and a rough measurement, I can usually narrow the options down quickly. I would rather tell someone a piece is too small or too large before they order it.

Think about what people should feel in the space

Most of my work is quiet. Even the dramatic photographs have a sense of stillness in them. That works well in offices because the art does not need to compete with everything else happening in the room.

For reception areas and lobbies, I usually lean toward images with more immediate presence. Aurora, strong mountain light, a broad panoramic scene. In private offices, meeting rooms, and quieter spaces, softer work can be stronger.

There is no rule that says corporate art has to be bland. It just has to feel considered.

Local matters more than people think

In Calgary, Alberta landscape work has an immediate connection. People know these places. They have driven the Icefields Parkway, skied near Lake Louise, stood at Bow Lake, or watched a storm roll across the prairie.

That recognition makes the work feel less like decoration and more like part of the place the business is actually in.

For companies that host clients from outside Alberta, it also says something about where they are. A large Canadian Rockies piece in a boardroom can do that without putting a giant Calgary skyline on the wall.

Choose the presentation for the room

Paper, framed work, and acrylic all behave differently.

Framed Hahnemühle German Etching has a softer, more traditional fine art feel. Acrylic has more depth and impact, and it works especially well in modern lobbies, boardrooms, and reception areas.

For many offices, my framed Gallery Editions are a good middle ground. They are substantial, professionally framed, and arrive ready to hang without moving into the price of a large limited Master Edition.

Do not buy five small pieces because the wall is large

This is one of the most common mistakes I see.

A large wall does not always need more artwork. Often it needs one piece with enough presence to hold the space.

There are rooms where a series works beautifully, especially hallways or long collaborative spaces. But if the wall is the visual anchor of a boardroom or reception area, one strong piece is usually cleaner.

I can help before anything is ordered

If you are furnishing a Calgary office, lobby, boardroom, clinic, hotel, or client space, you do not need to figure it out from a product grid.

Send me a photo of the wall, the approximate dimensions, and what the room is used for. I can recommend work, show you scale options, create a room preview, and talk through materials.
