This was taken on one of those mornings where the cold hits you the second you step outside—where your breath hangs in the air and your gear freezes almost as fast as your fingers.

It was just outside Calgary, after a heavy rime frost had rolled through overnight. Everything—trees, fences, grasses—was coated in a delicate, icy shell. The world looked frozen in place, like time had paused.

It was painfully cold, but also completely still. No wind. No sound. Just this raw, frozen beauty stretching out in every direction.

I titled it Deep Winter because that’s exactly what it was—the kind of cold that makes most people stay inside, but also creates some of the most magical scenes I’ve ever witnessed. That harshness has its own kind of quiet power.

This image is a reminder that even in the coldest, bleakest moments, there's beauty waiting to be found—if you're willing to step out into it.
