The turquoise color, produced by glacial rock flour suspended in the water, shifts through the day with the light, moving from pale mint in flat morning light to a vivid electric blue on clear summer afternoons. From the viewpoint at Bow Summit, the lake is shaped like a fox looking west, framed by the dense forest of the Mistaya Valley below and the peaks of the Waputik Range above. The scale of what you are seeing doesn't fully register until you have been standing there for a few minutes.

Peyto Lake sits on the Icefields Parkway in Banff National Park, about 40 minutes north of Lake Louise and roughly two hours from Calgary. The walk from the parking lot to the main viewpoint is 500 meters on a paved path, one of the most accessible fine art photography locations in the Canadian Rockies, and one of the most rewarding. In summer, the viewpoint crowds quickly between mid-morning and mid-afternoon. The photographers who make the strongest images arrive before dawn, when the color shifts from deep indigo to the first hint of turquoise and the mountains catch the earliest light.

In winter, Peyto Lake becomes a completely different place. The crowds disappear entirely. The turquoise vanishes under snow and ice. The lake freezes and the surrounding peaks take on a severity that summer never offers. The trail to the viewpoint becomes icy, microspikes are essential, and the upper parking lot closes, adding extra time to the approach. Most visitors never see Peyto Lake in winter. The photographers who do find something that no postcard has ever captured.

James Andrew has returned to Peyto Lake across multiple seasons and in conditions most photographers never experience. The night he made Aurora Over Peyto Lake, his most celebrated image, the temperature was pushing -30°C. He drove two hours alone in the dark after a text from a photographer friend about aurora activity. He hiked to the viewpoint in complete darkness, not knowing if anything would happen. And then the sky opened, green light stretching and shifting and dancing over the frozen lake below. It was the first aurora he had ever seen in his life. He stood there for a moment, camera in hand, not shooting. Just trying to take it in.

That image required precise planning, sub-zero temperatures, and a deep familiarity with the location built over years of returning. It is part of the Master Collection, limited to 25 editions on Hahnemühle German Etching paper and 10 editions on acrylic facemount. Once the edition sells out, it will not be reprinted.

These are not postcard photographs. The light, the cold, the silence, the patience required to be in the right place at the right moment, all of it is present in the print. They are collector pieces made for people who want to bring something of the real Peyto Lake into their homes.

A rare night over Peyto Lake, where the aurora lit the mountains in complete silence.

Captured at -30°C after a last-minute decision to leave home, this image marks a turning point in my journey as a photographer.

This image marks a turning point in my journey.

Read the story behind this image

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0791/2259/6131/files/aurora-borealis-peyto-lake-banff-national-park-northern-lights-fine-art-print-james-andrew.jpg?v=1772482500
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0791/2259/6131/collections/aurora-borealis-peyto-lake-banff-national-park-northern-lights-fine-art-print-james-andrew.jpg?v=1774886978
